Have you ever had a family photography session you really wanted to share, but coming up with the words to accurately describe the feeling from the session is nearly impossible? That’s where I am right now.

I shot this family session last September in Long Island, New York and I truly believe this session was a defining moment in my photography career. Spending time with the Dougherty family was more than just a family session. It was an experience. I was fortunate enough to spend the majority of my day with this beautiful family, and do you know what happens when you are with someone for more than your slotted 1 to 2 hour session time? The short answer is MAGIC. The longer answer is that you truly get a glimpse into the ins and outs of the every day life of a family. You see real personalities, meltdowns, tears, hugs, laughter, joy and happiness. You see everything. From a photographer’s perspective, thus vulnerability into your everyday life is truly a gift. It breaks down those awkward barriers. It lets everyone relax and really settle into their true selves (photographer included).

So this was more than just a family session for me. It was magic.
